Plimsoll ShipData is a subsite of PortCities Southampton (www.plimsoll.org) - your first port of call for information on Southampton and shipping. Here on the ShipData site you can search the Register Books produced by Lloyd's Register (LR) in 1930-1945 by name or former name.
Search results show a summary of ship information, including any name changes recorded in the Register Books, together with PDF links. These links take you to a copy of the relevant page in a particular year's Register Book.
The site is a collaboration between Southampton City Council and Lloyd's Register. The Maritime Collection at Southampton Central Library is an extensive research library on merchant shipping. LR's Information Services team offers a paid historical research service based on the unique resources of Lloyd's Register. Funding for the site came from a National Lottery grant from the New Opportunities Fund. More details about the project are at http://www.plimsoll.org/StartHere/AboutUs/default.asp.
